Changing your seat means changing comfort, posture and the line of the machine all at once. Best not to do it back to front. Before reaching for your card, here are the seven questions we ask in the workshop — in this order.
1. What is my main use?
City and short rides, road and distance, or a bit of both? This is the first question, because it drives all the others. A seat cut for the city is not the one that will carry you for eight hours on the open road.
2. Solo or two-up?
If you ride two-up regularly, you need a bench that gives the passenger a real place. If you are almost always alone, a solo seat — flat or scooped — is enough and keeps a purer line. No need to carry a length you never use.
3. What shape for my line?
A flat seat tautens the silhouette and serves the café racer look; a scooped seat asserts presence and supports over distance. Shape is chosen with the line of your machine, not against it. (We break down the three families in our comparison of shapes.)
4. Does it fit my model?
This is the check that saves the return. Your model, but also its model year: on bases that change from one year to the next, a detail in the bracket or the tank changes the fit. Check the original mounting points and the list of covered models on the page.
5. Which leather, which tanning?
Not all leathers age the same way. A full-grain, vegetable-tanned leather takes a patina and lasts, where an industrial leather mostly chases uniformity. That is what separates a seat that wears out from one that improves.
6. What comfort over distance?
Comfort is in the padding as much as in the leather: foam density, profile, how the load is spread. Foam that is too soft tires you; the right foam supports without going hard. Ask the question thinking of your longest ride, not the trip around the block.
7. Off the shelf or bespoke?
If a range seat ticks your boxes, it is the most direct route. If you are after a height, a cut, a leather or a finish that does not exist in the range, bespoke composes the seat with you, case by case. Better a seat that is right than one that is merely close.
